Having a new home is an exciting event! However, going from deciding to move into a new house to actually living in it requires a lot of work, especially cleaning.
Don’t get overwhelmed! If you don’t know where to start, here are the essential things you need to clean before move-in day.
Tip #1. Always clean from top to bottom
Going from top to bottom is the best strategy when cleaning large spaces. Doing this will help when you wipe something or push some dirt around so it doesn’t end up somewhere you’ve already cleaned!
For example, start by dusting the ceiling fans or other fixtures and finish by cleaning the floors. By going in the right order, dirt and debris will not resettle on your floors.
Tip #2. Start with the bathroom
The bathroom should be your top priority in your new home for many reasons, but mainly so you can use it during the clean-up—after all, you don’t want to be rushing to clean it last minute when you really need it. Here are three things you should clean in your bathroom:
- Sanitize the toilet. Your toilet is one thing that you’ll need sooner or later, even during the clean-up! So you need to start by sanitizing it. You can do this with a brush and either a store-bought cleaner or a mix of vinegar with baking soda.
- Wash the sink. Working with all that dust and dirt will leave your hands dirty often. So, unless you want to go about your day without being able to handle your cleaning tools, you need to clean the sink. You simply need a brush or sponge and some disinfectant to leave it spotless.
Clean the bathtub and shower
Having a clean shower or bathtub may not seem like a priority, but you’ll be grateful when you can take a relaxing bath as soon as you’re done with your move! So, don’t forget to do this at some point in your home cleaning.
Tip #3. Clean the appliances
Even if your house is new, it could come with some appliances; if it does, you must also clean them.
Before cleaning anything, focus first on the fridge. This way, you have somewhere to put all your groceries as soon as you get them! To avoid mixing harsh chemicals with your food, clean your fridge with vinegar and dish soap. Then, you can proceed with the rest of the appliances.
Tip #4. Dust furniture that is already in the house
This doesn’t happen often, but if your home came furnished or you’ve brought some furniture already, you must clean these before moving in. Otherwise, your furniture will sit to collect dust until you finish unpacking.
Tip #5. Wash the walls, windows, and mirrors
You need to start cleaning the walls, windows and mirrors around every room. For this task, you can take your trusty duster or a microfiber cloth and simply wipe from top to bottom.
Walls are particularly crucial before settling in because once you place all the furniture, it will be harder to reach some spots.
