Shower heads are usually forgotten when it comes to cleaning our bathrooms. Unfortunately, they can hold minerals and hard water stains that can give a bit of a nasty aspect. Hard water or minerals from the water can clog the water flow and make your shower time less pleasing.
How to clean your shower head using vinegar
Cleaning a shower head can be time-consuming and daunting for most homeowners, so this chore will usually be neglected. However, what if we told you that there’s an easy trick to clean the shower head? All you need is a plastic bag, a rubber band, and white vinegar.
Step 1: Prepare the materials
As mentioned, you don’t need more than a bag and vinegar for this trick. So, get a plastic bag and fill it about half of the way with white vinegar, and that’s it.
Step 2: Attach the bag to the shower head
Were you wondering why you need a rubber band? Simple; it will help you attach the bag to the fixture.
First, hang the bag on the shower head and make sure the vinegar covers the whole area without overflowing—adjust the amount of vinegar as needed before sealing.
Then, use a rubber band (or heavy-duty tape) to wrap the bag around the neck of the shower head, making sure it is tight enough to hold the bag and liquid.
Step 3: Wait and relax
Let the vinegar work its magic for about 30 minutes before removing the bag.
Note: If your shower head needs more time and it does not have gold, nickel, or any special coating/finish, you can keep it overnight for better results.
Step 4: Remove the bag
We aren’t over yet. Carefully remove the rubber band or heavy-duty tape while holding the bag. You can pour the vinegar down the shower drain. Turn on the hot water for about a minute to flush out the residue.
Step 5: Detail clean and rinse the shower head
Using a toothbrush, you can brush around the holes to remove more of the minerals and hard water stains. Turn on the hot water for about a minute to flush out all the remaining buildup.
Once you close the faucet, make sure you use a dry soft cloth to dry and polish the shower head to avoid water spots.
Your shower head is still a bit clogged and dirty looking?
Does your shower head still don’t look as clean as you’d like? Sometimes, mineral buildup can be tough to remove. Here’s a way you can do a more thorough cleanup.
- Remove the shower head and place it in a bucket with vinegar letting it sit for 30 minutes. If your shower head does not have gold, nickel, or any special coating/finish, you can leave it overnight for better results.
- Pour out vinegar into the shower drain, then place the shower head upside up. Turn on the hot water to flush out all the remaining buildup. Carefully pour out the hot water and rinse with room temperature water to cool down the shower head.
- You can use a toothbrush to scrub around the holes of the shower head, and with the help of a plastic toothpick or an interdental, you can brush the inside of each hole. Turn on the hot water to flush out all the remaining buildup and rinse with room temperature water to cool down the shower head.
- Repeat step 3 as many times as needed.
- Make sure you use a dry soft cloth to dry and polish the shower head to avoid water spots.
- Reattach it to the base. If you want to be sure there is no leakage, wrap some plumbing tape before screwing back the shower head.
